These Mokume Gane dangle earrings are made from sheet comprised of 27 alternating layers of copper and brass. The flower design is based on using Gimp to manipulate a photograph of a gorgeous shoji screen I took in the Takenaka carpentry museum in Kobe Japan. The pattern was formed and then stretched with the rolling mill to reveal the different layers of metal.
The flower shapes were cut out and a hammered brass wire was soldered to the back. Once finished the earrings were given a patina with liver of sulfur that increases the contrast between the copper and brass patterns.
A light wax coating was added to help preserve the patina; note the patina may change slightly over time with wear. The ear wires were made from hypo-allergic anodized niobium.
Each earring is approximately 1 3/8" long and approximately 1/2" wide. They are extremely light and move nicely while wearing.
